Hyderabad is the capital of Andra Pradesh, one of the four Southern states of India (the other three are Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka). It is in the Eastern part of the country, though not on the seaside. Hyderabad has an international airport and it can be reached by direct flights from many parts of the world. - What is the situation with local transport within Hyderabad?
- What are the means of transportation in India?
- Can I plan my trips in India from abroad?
Question: Do I need any vaccinations to travel to India?
Answer:
There are no required vaccines to enter India unless you come from one country where yellow fever is endemic. The vaccination certificate is issued for 10 years, and it becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. The countries is compulsory for people visiting (or transiting at a port) from the following countries: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Equatorial guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bassu, Ivory Coast, Keny, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somali, Sudan (South of 15 degree N), Togo, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela and Panama. You can check this website (http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/yellowBookCh4-YellowFever.aspx) to know more about yellow fever. If you have any doubt about it, please check with the Indian Embassy in your country of residence.
Question: Is there malaria in India?
Answer:
As in many tropical countries, malaria is a disease present in India. Whether you should take medicines or not previous to coming to the country is up to your local doctor. However, Hyderabad is not a zone known for malaria, and most local people do not take any precaution and do not fall ill. It is advisable to bring some mosquito repellent cream or use some of the local devices (easily available in the market) in the event you encounter a mosquito problem.
Question: What about rabies?
Answer:
Although rabies is present in the country, it is not a serious hazard. India has many stray dogs, most of them very pacific and used to people, will not attack unless provoked. However, no matter how cute they might look it is best not to pet or feed stray dogs and other animals.
Question: Is water safe?
Answer:
Water is safe in big cities in the country. But since the bacteria and other components of the water might be different from what you are used to, it is better to drink bottled water. You can buy bottles in any decent shop or restaurant/hotel (avoid suspicious looking places, where the bottles might not be safe). Bottled water will be available free at the convention centre during the days of the congress. Paid bottle water will also be available at all the accommodation arranged by the organazing committee. Bottled water is relatively cheap in India; currently it is about 15 rupees (30 cents of a US dollar) per litre.
Question: Can I get meat in India?
Answer:
India is known for her vegetarianism; however, a big percentage of the population of the country eats eggs, meat and fish. You can easily get non-vegetarian food (eggs, chicken and mutton/lamb). . But as in any tropical country, you should be careful about how the meat has been kept; avoid terribly cheap restaurants (that non-veg meal for less than a dollar might make you fall sick quite fast) and eating in the streets (many Indians do not eat food cooked in the open, at street stalls).
Question: Shall I brush my teeth with tap water?
Answer:
Water from the tap is usually quite safe for this, though we do not recommend it for drinking. However if you do not feel comfortable about it, you can always use bottled (mineral) water. As explained above, water in the big cities of India is relatively safe.
Question: How are the medical facilities in India?
Answer:
The country has very good facilities in many cities (and it is slowly becoming a place for “medical tourism”). The organizers of ICM2010 will help you in case of need.
Question: Are medicines available in India?
Answer:
Medicines are easily available in pharmacies around the city of Hyderabad. In smaller places it might be more difficult to find, and you should carry whatever medicines you take regularly with you, if you plan to travel. Also you should know that medicines might be known by names different from those in your country, so it is better to always carry the composition of whatever medicine you need.
Question: What can I buy in India? Are laptops/electronics cheap?
Answer:
Goods imported or manufactured with foreign license are not particularly cheap in India, and in fact, they might be more expensive than in certain countries in the West. Local handicrafts are cheap.
Question: Will I be cheated when I buy? Is bargaining acceptable?
Answer:
You can get cheated, of course; it happens even to locals, so do not feel bad. Bargaining on handicrafts and other “tourist” objects is permissible, and if you are good at it you can reduce your prices. But remember that the seller knows the price of the object, and he will not sell at a loss, and you are likely to be charged a little more than “usual”; just take it easy. Bargaining at government shops (do not confuse them with “government approved shops”) is not allowed; in those shops prices are fixed.
Question: What is there to see in the states near Hyderabad?
Answer:
Neighboring states include, among others, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh, which offer ample opportunities for tourism. To the South are the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala; the first is known for its temples, while Kerala is called the paradise of the South. To the North is Orissa, also known for temples.
Question: Is the country safe, from a health point of view?
Answer:
India is safe, for example the bird flu and swine flu had very little impact in the country. Medical facilities in the big cities are good. A little precaution in what you do (as mentioned above, do not pet stray animals) and what you eat (avoid raw vegetables, salad, and take care of where you eat) will be enough to keep you safe during your stay in India.
Question: Do I need a visa to enter India?
Answer:
Foreign national coming into India are required to possess a valid passport/travel document of their country and a valid India visa. There is no provision of ‘Visa on Arrival’. Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan do not require a visa to enter India, and nationals of Maldives if their period of stay is up to 90 days. For more information please check this website. For a list of Indian Embassies you can check this link.
The organizing committee will make efforts to make the visa application easy. However you should plan ahead and find details from the Indian Embassy in your country of residence.
Question: What is the situation with local transport within Hyderabad?
Answer:
The organising committee will arrange for transport from hotels to the venue of the congress. There will also be pick-up at the airport.
To move in the city there are buses; although cheap (about Rs. 1.5 per kilometer),they are very crowded. A typical means of transport is (auto)rickshaws, also known simply as “autos”, small motor vehicles with a capacity for three passengers. Fares (about Rs. 8 per kilometer) are usually negotiated at the time of getting the auto, so you should ask a local person how much going from point A to point B will be, and expect to pay a little more. Trips at nights are usually a little more expensive. Some times auto drivers will refuse to go to a place (from another one that is far), you will have to try a few autos before you get one willing to take you.
If you plan to go to a far away place a good option is to rent a car with a driver; fares are fixed by kilometer and waiting time. The fares for this service are much cheaper than renting a car (without driver) in Europe or US.
The organizers of ICM will make arrangements with some taxi companies to take passengers around the city at a fixed rate. Taxi rates are low in Hyderabad, currently they are about Rs 12 per kilometer for a non airconditioned taxi and Rs 15 for an air conditioned service.
Question: What are the means of transportation in India?
Answer:
India is a big country, so flights are a comfortable and fast way of moving around. Trains are decent, especially if you travel in air conditioned coaches, but slow; you can assume an average speed of 50 kms per hour for most trains. There are a few fast trains between important cities. Most routes has the so-called tourist quota, where a few seat on the trains are reserved for people on tourist visa
You can get such seats by showing your passport at the ticket counters of train stations.
Question: Can I plan my trips in India from abroad?
Answer:
If you want you can get air (and perhaps train) tickets abroad. If you are more adventurous, or do not know exactly where to go, you can buy the ticket in India
